An assembly focused on smoothing out racial tensions between black and Latino high school students has created controversy in Reseda.
So This is where I went to high school and is where my brother is currently attending.
Since 10 years ago there’s been a tradition of having Black Brown Love Day which is a day to bring both Hispanics and African Americans together to communicate in order to stop violence. You see in my area there was this constant hate between blacks and browns, there’s been fights, murders and separation. Things are much better now but back in the day at Cleveland there use to be a lot of fights between blacks and browns so the school came up with this day to help bring students get along better with each other.
Back when I was in high school I loved Black Brown Day because besides being fun and giving you an excuse to miss classes, I actually got to made new friends every time which for me it was great.
Well the assembly was yesterday, my brother was there and he said it was great. But now there’s danger of this wonderful movement disappearing because some white girl tried to get in, was denied entrance for obvious reasons and now the Caucasian parents are making a big deal about it.
In the link you can see the local news report about it and the parent that they interviewed actually has the audacity to get mad because according to her the message it sends is that and I quote “only black and brown children can cause trouble, are you saying that white and Asian cant?”
I’m just seriously irritated that just because this girl wanted to get in to an specifically noted “black and brown assembly” that happens every freaking year now the school is in trouble. Yes she got detention because she obviously wanted to ditch classes, and yet their basing it on racism. Now according to this parents they feel offended because the school is saying whites aren’t violent.
It’s not stated on the news report but as far as we know its only white parents who are complaining, the Asian community is not even bothered by the assembly.
Project for my Social Psych class last semester. This poster series was created to 1) challenge these internalized stereotypes by bringing them to the viewer’s attention and 2) expand the range of role models by including a diverse group of women. Each poster follows the same basic pattern: a woman who has demonstrated her competency in a particular area refutes the stereotype that appears above her in the form of “Girls can’t …”. While the posters target girls ranging from children to young adults, I expect the message would also cause people outside that demographic to question their own beliefs about women and power. I designed each aspect of the posters with several principles of social psychology in mind:
I don’t have enough money for my basic needs.
Working 40+ hours just to pay my rent
Now I don’t even have a single cent
Tuition is high, I gotta pay for books
Oh i’m so broke and I don’t wanna look
I popped open my wallet, no funds to count
my credit declined and my check just bounced
Woah daddy daddy can you spare a ten
Woah tuition hike better slow it down
It’ll take me 45 years to pay off this debt
and I don’t even think I’ll find a job
Take all, my, needs
Just wanna swipe my card
without extra charge
“Welcome to Cardboard Box Office – our homemade creations of some of your favorite movie scenes built from some of our favorite domestic junk.
The project began after finding that we had accumulated both a lot of cardboard boxes (due to moving to a new country) and a baby (due to giving birth). With our social lives drastically altered we decided to find a way to make some of those housebound weekends a little more fun.
The costumes, props, and sets in Cardboard Box Office are created entirely out of everyday household items, toys, cardboard, and three individuals slowly losing their sanity. Enjoy!”

Batch of ‘centaur’ sketches with only one actual horse-butt in the lot, but eh close enough.
I think I got this phase mostly out of my system, whew. Good exercise in painting skin/fur and speedsketching though.
